Things we love: Snapseed photo editing app for Android and iOS
All eyes are on you when you post images onto social media. But if you’re relying on nothing more than Instagram filters to make your photos look their best, you can do better than that. Here’s another tool you have to explore: Snapseed.
Like it or not, people will judge the effectiveness of your social media presence by the quality of the images you post. It’s always worth while to take good quality images and make them look their best before you click “share.”
Both Twitter and Instagram allow you to tweak the look of any image you upload, but it’s so much better to edit off-line in a simple app like Snapseed, which is available for iOS and Android.
Snapseed is Google’s own photo editing app, and I’ve used it on Android for more than a year. Whether I’m posting photos on social media for myself personally, for our company or for clients like the Walter Scott Prize, I rarely post images that I haven’t first put through Snapseed’s powerful tools. Here’s some of what you can do:
Get rid of colour cast on your image by choosing the white balance option and dragging the crosshair onto something in your picture that you know is white, such as the egg cup in this photo:
Give a one-click all-purpose fix to images with HDR-scape, which you can find under Filters. I usually reduce the effect of HDR-scape to no more than 25% percent, as anything higher than that makes an image look overprocessed:
Easily crop into a square or other format:
Take a look at the before-and-after on my basket of autumn fruit. The edited version is subtly but clearly brighter and more lively:
One thing: be sure you use the correct version of your photo when you post it online. In Instagram, for example, be sure to choose your Snapseed folder and select the image from there:
